Blog Your Heart Out

The wonderful Cathie over at Wicked World of Lucas kindly nominated me for this ‘Blog Your Heart Out’ award where I answer the following five questions about myself.  I’ve finally gotten around to doing it so here goes:

What/Who encouraged you to start blogging? Friends encouraged me to start blogging; they liked my Facebook statuses because they said they made them laugh and that I should ‘do something’ with my writing.  So my blog was born in January of last year.

How did you choose what topics to blog about? I’ve continued to write about observations that I used to put on Facebook so my posts are just extended versions of my statuses.  The shorter observations I tweet.  I try to use different formats like poetry and rewriting song lyrics to mix it up a bit.  Life with kids isn’t perfect so I never try to give the impression that it is…but it can be very funny; I hope people can relate to that.  After having my eldest child I encountered a few ‘professional mums’ who made it sound like they had the whole motherhood thing sorted and it made me feel very inadequate; I’ve never thought I have motherhood sorted, I’m just muddling through like everyone else and that’s what I write about. I dubbed myself ‘Distressed Housewife’ because I left teaching to be at home with my children but soon realised I’m completely shit at being a housewife and I’m always in a mild state of panic so it seemed appropriate.

What is something most people don’t know about you? That I’m very, very anally retentive about some things, almost on the verge of OCD. For example, when I was teaching I had a master file of resources that I photocopied from and I genuinely hated taking anything out of it in case I lost it or couldn’t find the right place again.  I would be anxious until the resource was safely back in the folder.  I think that will come as a shock to people because my house is a tip a lot of the time, I don’t like cleaning and many aspects of my life are chaotic…but I don’t like certain things being out of place or my routine being disrupted.

What 3 words describe your style? I hope the people who know me wouldn’t disagree with fun-loving, thoughtful and honest. (Lucky I can only have three words – the fourth would no doubt have been piss-head).

What do you like to do when you are not blogging? I like walking the dog (on my own – I would rather remove my teeth with pliers and no anaesthetic than take the kids).  I’m an avid reader.  I actually like exercise which is good because I also really like food. I love going out for meals and Saturday nights with my hubby when he cooks something special.  I have a fantastic group of friends so I enjoy girly nights and we like to go as a family and stay for a few nights with some other close friends of ours.  I also love sunshine so holidays abroad are pretty high on my list too, when we can afford them.

I now nominate/tag lovely Twitter friends @nortonmum, @sonnyandluca  @NellHeshram @wallymummy and @littlerascalreviews to answer the same five questions.

  1. I love reading lovely posts (not that there’s anything wrong with a good old rant!) but reading this made me smile. I’m sure we’ll really get along if & when we finally meet! 🙂 I’ll try to do my post but you might have to give me a few weeks! x

  2. Aaah thanks for including me! I’m glad to hear you’re a bit of a piss-head – shame I couldn’t stay longer for gin cocktails the other evening 🙂
